Case Studies: Virtual Book Tours That are Successes

The Virtual Book Blog tour is one of the most economical publicity tools that you use can use to promote your book.

Publishers are overloaded with clients and do not have the time to organize one for you.

You can hire someone to organize the tour and handle all the details for you. But keep in mind you will still need to devote time to creating the content and promoting the tour.

In her New York Times article, Kara Jesella quotes authors and publishers on their views about the success of virtual book blog tours.

* Amy Cohen, author of the book, “The Late Bloomer’s Revolution”, said that her memoir has made it onto at least one best seller list without traditional reading or signing tour.

* When Frank Portman, the frontman for the band Mr.T. Experience, published “King Dork”, he teamed up with Andrew Krunoff, a popular blogger, who created a video “trailer” about the book’s main character, an alienated boy who dreams up imaginary bands, and asked Mr. Portman questions for Q and A. These files were posted on Web sites like Gawker, Largehearted Boy and Brooklyn Vegan, along with a recording of Mr. Portman reading from the book and performing songs he had written for it. The goal for Mr. Portman, was to generate “links and Google-ability.” He achieved that and more. Tantalized by the Internet attention, USA Today wrote about Mr. Portman and the “Late Show with David Letterman” auditioned him as a guest (he wasn’t picked).

* “If I had to choose, I’d rather have an author promote themselves online, ” said Felicia Sullivan, the senior online marketing manager of Collins, an imprint of Harper Collins, who maintains that the Internet exposes authors to a broader audience than most bookstore readings. You can reach at least a few hundred people on a blog, and save time, money and the fear of being a loser if no one shows up to your reading.”

Even though a tour may last a few weeks or a few months, your interview as long as the host keeps your post in their archives will be on the search engines forever.
